Known Issues

Recent Browser Issues

Affects: Java 1.6.0_29.
Symptoms: Users will encounter a session error when accessing the WebCT Vista Chat tool. Computers with the latest JRE versions 29 will be prompted with an error message: "Session has expired. Close the program and log in again".
Resolution: Downgrade to the recommended JRE. 1.6.0_26 per recommendations from Blackboard while the issue is being addressed with their Development team.
Steps to downgrade to Java 1.6.0_26:

  1. Go to: Control Panel > Java Panel
  2. Select: Java tab > Enable 1.6.0_26 (or older version only). Make sure that release 29 is not enabled.
  3. Also, clear the Browser cache, cookies and temp files. Close the Browser application then reattempt access.

Affects: Internet Explorer 9.
Symptoms: Users will encounter access issues to WebCT Vista after login. Computers with JRE versions 23 and older will be prompted with an error message: "A problem with this website has caused IE to close".
Resolution: Update to JRE. 1.6.0_26

Chat Tool Problems on Mac

Affects: Mac users using the Chat tool.
Symptoms: The chat tool is not interactive once you close the window and re-open it (i.e. users can't view own text submission or other participants text in chat window).
Resolution: None at this time. The Blackboard Product Development division has determined there is a software defect. This issue does not occur in PC's. There is no ETA when the issue will be resolved (Ref: VST-5927).
Work-around: In the interim, Instructors & Course Designers can add Wimba Classroom tool in the course and disable the internal Vista chat tool.

WebCT Vista Java-Related Problems:

Affects: WebCT Vista tools such as Chat, HTML creator and File Manager.
Symptoms: WebCT Vista Tools that use the java-applet do not function properly.
Resolution: Clearing the SSL certificate within the Browser application and clearing the Java cache folder will resolve most WebCT Vista java-related issues.

Clearing the SSL Certificate within the Browser: Within the browser application, go to the Certificate manager:

  1. Find "THAWTE" related certificates and delete the certificates.
  2. Once completed, close and restart the browser.

Note: By clearing the SSL certificates, upon the first time we access WebCT Vista, you will receive a WARNING message.
“This Connection is untrusted to access". You will need to confirm this security exception.

Clearing Java Cache:

PC Users

  1. Click Start > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on Java.
  3. Click the General tab.
  4. Under "Temporary Internet Files," click Settings.
  5. Click Delete Files...
  6. Click OK.

Mac Users

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Go to Applications > Utilities.
  3. Open Java Preferences.
  4. Click the General tab.
  5. Ensure Java SE 6 32-bit is above the 64-bit. If not, select the 32-bit line and drag it above the 64-bit line.
  6. Click the Network tab.
  7. Click Delete Files.
  8. Click OK.

Pop-up Windows Open with Page Not Found Error or Login Page

Affects: Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7
Symptoms: Users receive an "Unable to locate the page you requested” message or the Vista login page when opening pop-up windows (e.g. Announcements, WebDAV info, etc.)
Resolution: The issue is known to occur on PCs where Sophos Anti-Virus is installed. Adjustment of a browser setting will resolve the issue.
To adjust the setting:

  1. Go to Tools >> Internet Options >> Security.
  2. Click on Trusted Sites.
  3. Place a check mark in the box beside Enable Protected Mode.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart Internet Explorer.

Login Prompt Appears when Downloading Office Files in Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7

Affects: IE8 on Windows 7
Symptoms: A login prompt appears after clicking Open when viewing a Microsoft Office document (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
Resolution: None at this time.
Work-around: Click Cancel (you may need to click it multiple times) and the document will load.

WebDAV Does Not Work on Windows 7

Affects: Windows 7
Symptoms: WebDAV does not work.
Resolution: None at this time. Blackboard has confirmed that WebDAV does not work on Windows 7. This issue is slated for resolution in Blackboard Vista 8.0 Service Pack 5.
Work-around: In the interim, please use a third-party WebDAV client. Ex. AnyClient

Error When Viewing SCORM Data Reports

Affects: SCORM Data Reports
Symptoms: When attempting to view page 2, page 3, etc. of a SCORM Data Report, an unexpected exception error is displayed.
Resolution: None at this time.
Work-around: Adjust the paging preferences to All; then rerun the Data Report.
